To those people that chop onions without any drop of tears from their eyes how do they do it?

Like my Mom and cousin sis, both can slice a train load of onions and nothing. Not even a single drop of tear.

But me? . Just looking at the onion with a side eye and I'm already mourning the Onion. :|

As you chop up an onion, it releases enzymes that act as catalysts for us weeping our kitchen counter.

When these molecules are released they form a type of acid which then reacts with the air – the resulting gas hits your eye, reacting with the water there to create sulphuric acid, which burns.

This leads to more tears as your eyes tries to get rid of the stinging.

But, there are 3 tips I know one could employ to prevent you from mourning (as you call it) or sobbing your eyes out every time you need to cook up an onion-filled dish.
  1. Light a candle
The idea is that the flame will get rid of some of the fumes which cause the gas.
Without them, you shouldn’t have as much of a problem.

  2. Freeze it first *This method i do use always*

Keeping the onion in the freezer about 15 minutes before you want to chop it.
The cold is supposed to stop it releasing the molecules which cause all the problems.
Slicing an onion in water works too, again because it stops the vapour hitting your eyes.
  3. Use a spoon
Pop the tip of a spoon in your mouth while you cut your onion and you won’t cry.
It would work because the chemicals bind to the metal of the spoon before they can get to your eyes, so you don’t cry.

well, I totally disagree with 1 and 3.

1. I wudnt go looking for a candle, and probably be in closed door ( coz proper ventilation might blow off the candle light)
any time I want to cut onion?

This would not work too because if it would, then the metalic part of the knife, would probably do the same job..

No. 2, I would try that out :)

I do use the "slice under water system"

*Sometime ago I was invited to burial ceremony, Wch I was opportune to be among the ladies preparing food..

In the course, I met a woman slicing onion inside a bowl of water, I approached her to know why..

if I still remember her own very words.
She said: "I'm a very emotional person, if it enters my eyes, and tears starts coming out, it would take long time to stop, no matter how hard I try to control it, Slicing under water makes it easier."

Twas like momma talking to daughter.

since than though, I have been using her method ... :)
